Services Provided by the Rockingham June O’Connor Centre

In House Activities

Are enjoyed by members as it is a forum for building friendships and socialising, Pool Competitions, beading, bingo, potting seedlings, making sun catchers, card games (with UNO being a popular choice) and other group based activities are enjoyed by the members at the centre, as they are often learning new skills and gain satisfaction, confidence and feel empowered when they succeed.

Recreational Outings

The movies are enjoyed by the members, as they enjoy not just the movies, but the company as well. Members contribute a $1 a week to attend a local Restaurant in Kwinana to have a buffet meal for a very reasonable price, which they have saved and budgeted for.  We also utilise the new local food hall, mini golf, coffee shops and op shops, as members are more likely to use these local resources in their own time either by themselves or with another member.

Bunning’s

Members and staff have attended Bunning’s and made mosaic pots and a tool box. Vicki asked for a donation of a worm farm which was granted and 500 worm’s were also donated this will save us from having to buy so many expensive soil enhancers.

Even Keel

The members thoroughly enjoy his humour and massages, some commenting on how the massage has helped to relieve stress and is also relaxing and rejuvenating, with some members thoroughly enjoying Peter’s massage, that they follow him from centre to centre.

Staff, Volunteers and Students

Staff, Volunteers and Students are an invaluable asset to the June O'Connor Centre and are a huge support to the day to day operations of the centre. Thank you to June O'Connor for her support and commitment to our centre. Thank you to the Rockingham support staff who are committed to the daily running of the Centre, Cathy S and Cameka S and welcome back Lee T as Lee relieves us for holidays and also works one day a week. Our volunteers are an important asset, thanks to Lesley and Ann for donating your time and efforts and also TAFE Students who did their placement’s here and were a great help during their time at the centre, as their assistance in general duties and support allows the staff to focus on the members more immediate needs. Also a big thanks, to our cleaning lady Bianca, for her support and commitment and keeping our centre clean.

IT

David J of Floyd Technologies continues to provide us with his excellent knowledge on the running and maintenance of our computers at the June O'Connor Centre. Many thanks David for your knowledge and support.

Dental Hygiene

The coordinator networked and made arrangements for 12 members to have free dental treatment; extractions, fillings, scale and clean etc, during the last six months (with some of these treatments being very costly, over a $1000 work on some of the members teeth), this has been very beneficial to the oral health and hygiene of members and has given them more confidence and the motivation to keep their teeth in good condition. Thanks to the South Perth Dental Practice on the 21st February 2009 for working on 6 of our members teeth and also the lovely ladies at the Malibu Dental Practice for working on 6 members teeth on the 23rd May 2009.

Training

The JOC was approached by the Beaconsfield TAFE to take on two community service students to undertake their field placement at the centre; both students successfully completed their field placements here and gained useful experience.

Foodcents

We were very fortunate to have two lovely ladies Tanya and Lauren from the Red Cross, to educate us on the fundamentals of healthy eating and exercise. Tanya is a qualified Dietician and gave both staff and members the knowledge and hands on approach to healthy eating and the importance to find 30 minutes of exercise a day. We enjoyed their cooking classes and their approach to teaching.
