Services Provided by the Mandurah June O’Connor Centre

RAS

This is an 8 week program to improve member’s health, increase their social networks and access to local sporting clubs. Mandurah’s first RAS program was organised by request from the members. They discussed the need to improve their fitness and to lose weight. The RAS program is run from the Mandurah Aquatic Centre; it is water based aerobic class called ‘ODD BODDS’. Members reported back at the end of the 8 weeks as feeling stronger, lost weight and had significantly improved their balance.

PROMT

(Peters Remedial Office Massage Therapy), Peter has made a huge impact to the services provided at Mandurah JOC. It is evident that Peter’s professional service has been highly beneficial to the members overall well-being and health. Members have asked for Peter to be permanent staff every week as they have commented on how it assists with their weekly recovery. Peter has built up a great rapport with the Mandurah members in a short period of time. Thank you Peter for making the long trip down to Mandurah your time and effort is appreciated by staff and members.

Hearing Voices Group

Mandurah June O'Connor Centre has joined with Perth Home Care to host Hearing Voices for the first time in the Peel Region. Hearing Voices is an 8 week program where consumers are encouraged to take part in their own recovery by promoting self empowerment. The group is run by a voice hearer and co-facilitated by a staff member.

Mental Health First Aid

The first week of July Mandurah ran its first Mental Health First Aid Certificate. Mandurah JOC, and D2DL members and staff attended a two day course run by Brain Ambulance instructors. The certificate is programmed for Carers’ education in mental health; however we were fortunate that the facilitator adapted the information for the members. This is a highly successful course and Mandurah JOC will be running it on a regular basis.

Diabetes WA

Mandurah JOC has linked in with Diabetes WA due to the high number of members that have been diagnosed with both Type 1 and 2 diabetes. Diabetes WA will be running regular courses regarding the necessary diet, and how to budget shop for their condition.

Craft Group

A craft group has been set up by the members on a weekly basis. It has been hugely successful with all of the products made being sold at Mental Health forums and educational days. One member was commissioned to make over 300 items for Healthy Women Week at the Perth Convention Centre.
