Services Provided by the Joondalup June O’Connor Centre

Popular groups currently running include the weekly hand & foot pamper, hairdressing and the ladies beauty therapy group, these sessions are facilitated by JOC staff are very well attended. The Thursday morning bowling club is well supported with an average of  8-10 members playing each week. In addition to those activities our members continue to enjoy playing pool, art & craft, jewellery making, board games, mosaics, table tennis, computer workshop, karaoke, Wii fit, music & cooking.

A highlight for the day for many of the members is the healthy nutritious mid-day meal we provide for a very reasonable cost.

Activities in the centre are subject to change and do so frequently in order to meet the ongoing changing needs of members attending the centre, staff work positively and tirelessly to facilitate these needs

Recreation/Outings

Many thanks go to Lottery west for funding our new vehicle, it’s so spacious, and well-equipped with all the mod cons, (and it’s automatic, no more struggling with the gears) it enables members to travel more comfortably on recreational outings. It is greatly appreciated by everyone.

There have been some very exciting outings over the year, these include -: Whale watching, The Perth Royal Show, Perth Zoo, A Water-ski Day, Supa Golf, A River Cruise, Kings Park, and a trip to Araluen to listen to Jan’s son (Jay) sing and see the tulips.

June O’Connor’s birthday was a huge success and well patronised by the members, who enjoyed themselves immensely.

Train trips are also proving popular, with clients using their free travel passes to access various destinations. Members then plan the day to include visits to places of interest nearby choosing a pleasant park to enjoy their picnic lunch..

Shorter outings include -: op-shopping, picnics, BBQs, bush walks, coffee club, cinema & lunch and a weekly trip to Wanneroo markets to buy fresh fruit & veg.

All the outings are very popular and well attended, so much so that members often transport themselves to the destination due to the bus being full.

Many members have formed social networks and join together for weekend activities such as -: car rallies, movies & meal, communal evenings at local restaurants and pubs, fishing and bushwalking. Friendships have grown and individuals support each other.

Groups

Even Keel – Bipolar Disorder support group meets at JOC the 3rd Thursday of each month.

Clarkson Community Mental Health facilitates a walking group each Monday, JOC members get picked up from the centre and are returned to the centre for lunch after the walk.

Centre Link advisor – Maureen McLean gave a talk to members to advise them on changes to pensions and what extras members could be entitled to. This was a very informative session and further advice sessions are arranged.

Forthcoming events include a chat for the Ladies at the centre about “The Menopause”; members are looking forward to this session scheduled for July.

We held an Education and Employment Day together with D2DL, many members gleaned valuable information from TAFE and various organisations such as Bizlink, Good Samaritan Industries, Centrelink and Workright came to enlighten people on work and study options.
